SCIP Components

SCIP - School Community Intervention Program - provides a systematic approach to assist schools and communities in responding to student abuse of chemicals and other behavioral health issues. Teachers and other school personnel join SCIP Teams, where they are trained by our staff in SCIP's four components:

  • Identification of the problem behaviors that affect scholastic performance
  • Appropriate intervention with the student and family or caregivers
  • Referral to community drug, alcohol or mental/behavioral health agencies for evaluation and treatment
  • Direction in creating a student support system that promotes a healthy lifestyle

SCIP was originally designed in 1983 to address alcohol and other substances students used to cope with life's stressors, to fit in, or simply to experiment with what today's trends present. As our culture's needs have grown, the program has expanded to include training on such varied topics as:

  • Substance addiction treatment and recovery
  • Drug paraphernalia display, exhibiting items and methods for disguising illicit drug use
  • Relapse dynamics
  • Herbal, over-the-counter meds, and prescription drug abuse
  • Eating disorders
  • Self-injury, such as cutting
  • Values, attitudes and beliefs about chemicals
  • Domestic violence
  • Bullying
  • How grief manifests in students
  • Preventing suicide
  • Youth gambling
